‘Porton Man’ is a testing robot that was built by Crawley Creatures to trial protective clothing for the British Military. The developers used iglidur X plain bearings in all of its joints.

In order to ensure that clothing is safe for use and provides adequate protection against chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear substances, the clothing needs to be contaminated with such elements. As conventional bearings quickly fail when faced with chemical agents such as mustard gas and sarin, developers turned to igus for its iglidur X series of abrasion resistant bearings.

As well as offering extreme resistance to chemicals, these bearings remain unaffected by water and can withstand temperatures ranging from -100 to 250°C, making them the perfect solution for a robot with such an important job!
