Pepperl+Fuchs is the world’s leading manufacturer of intrinsically safe explosion protection components used in a wide range of process automation industries. The family owned business has over 65 years industrial experience, with a turnover in the region of €500million and is one of the top 50 control and instrumentation companies in the world.

The company’s explosion protection equipment range of hazardous area enclosures are manufactured in Birmingham, UK, being based around high quality solutions in the increased safety and flameproof protection classes. The range provides several different options of enclosure dependent upon the project application and specification required, with a variety of sizes and materials available including stainless steel, glass reinforced polyester (GRP) as well as aluminium and cast iron.

Increased safety (Ex e) protection is based on the premise that an explosion will not occur if a spark cannot occur. The protection can only be used for equipment that does not include spark or heat producing components in normal service and where “increased safety” measures have been implemented to further reduce these risks. An “Exe” enclosure need only meet a rating of IP54 to prevent water ingress leading to electrical fault and sparking.

The company’s range of hazardous area mountable Ex e solutions encompasses everything from simple junction boxes containing a small number of terminals through to large increased safety control solutions customised to suit a specific project application requirement.

TERMINALS & JUNCTION BOXES

The full series of terminals and Junction boxes can be equipped with various types of terminals and cable glands depending on your individual needs and come with Ex e, Ex tb, and Ex ia certifications.

The glass fiber reinforced polyester series (GL) offer the durability to withstand rough operating conditions.  They are anti-static and resistant against hard impacts.  The UV stabilized material does not degrade and provides optimal corrosion resistance.

The compact stainless steel (SLS) series make these devices endurable and resistant under any harsh industrial conditions. Cost-saving terminal arrangements speed up your total installation time.

The stainless steel (XLS) series perform even under the most rigorous onshore or offshore conditions. Thanks to their solid construction and electro-polished surface, they withstand harsh environmental conditions and provide excellent tarnish and corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the material facilitates the use in areas with high hygienic requirements, such as in pharmaceutical and food processing plants.

The stainless steel with return flange (FXLS) series meets all the criteria of the XLS series with the added key feature of return flange sealing method. Thus, accumulated dust, dirt and moisture will not enter the enclosure when the hinged lid is opened. This makes the FXLS series especially beneficial in offshore applications.

The stainless steel for high voltages (HVB) series is especially designed for the installation of power distribution networks.  This variation from the XLS series provides a solution for connecting high voltage cables in field applications.

3 equally spaced internal bus bars rated to 6.6 kV and 650 A are mounted on insulators.  The internal arrangement of the connection bars ensures total electrical insulation.  Additionally, the HVB terminal box is equipped with a hasp through the enclosure lid. This provides a vandal proof method of securing the enclosure lid via padlocking.

CONTROL UNITS

The company’s control units are designed for operation and monitoring of electrical circuits or basic machinery in explosion hazardous areas.  They are available in protection types Ex e, Ex d, Ex tb and come in two series.  The glass fiber reinforced polyester (LCP) series and the stainless steel (LCS) series, both with up to 4 functions per unit.

CONTROL STATIONS

There are two product series of control stations available, certified according to Ex e explosion protection as a well as Ex ib, and Ex tb.

The glass fiber reinforced polyester (GLCS) series with up to 35 operator elements and the stainless steel (FXLSCS) with up to 56 operator elements both covering various control functions such as pushbuttons, LED indicators, control switches, potentiometers, and ammeters can be integrated in one single control station, depending on enclosure size and series.   The smooth enclosure finish of the GLCS series provides increased corrosion resistance and the electro-polished surface of the FXLSCS series protects the stainless steel against tarnish and corrosion, thus providing an ideal solution for environments with high requirements on hygienics, which are common in food processing and pharmaceutical industries.

By providing manufacture, sales and support from one company with a wealth of experience across the full spectrum of hazardous area protection methods from Ex i through to Ex d, Pepperl+Fuchs is uniquely quali?ed to provide complete solutions for hazardous locations and complex applications.
